BUTIAGRUS NABONNANDII

The Butiagrus nabonnandii is a spontaneous hybrid discovered in Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina, where the genera Butia y Syagrus romanzoffiana coexist naturally. This hybrid stands out for its rapid growth, cold resistance and tropical appearance, making it the ideal alternative to the coconut tree in cold climates. Our most successful production. Hybrid with tropical appearance and high resistance to cold -11ºC. We personally pollinated this magnificent cross between Butia and Syagrus romanzzoffiana. The best choice for an exotic garden in cold areas. Faster growth than a Butia, better resistance to root and apex diseases. Tolerates heavier watering and assimilates nutrients better in heavy soils than any Syagrus.

Botanical Characteristics of Butiagrus nabonnandii

  • Robust and slender trunk: Thinner than Butia but more imposing than Syagrus.
  • Arched leaves: They combine the elegance of Syagrus with the solidity of Butia.
  • Cold resistance: Tolerates temperatures down to -10°C without protection.
  • Exceptional vigour: It grows rapidly, even in poor, sandy soils.

Advantages of the Butiagrus Hybrid

Thanks to its hybrid genome, Butiagrus outperforms its parents in several respects:

  1. Tolerance to wet soils: Better adapted than Butia and Syagrus.
  2. Reduced micronutrient deficiencies: They thrive in difficult soils.
  3. Improved hygiene: The fruits of the first generation are usually non-viable, which makes it easier to clean the soil.

The aim of Butiagrus cultivation is to combine the cold hardiness of Butia with the rapid growth and tropical appearance of Syagrus.

Nursery Production and Cultivation

We produce these hybrids by manual pollinationa complex process that guarantees high quality results. We are grateful for the expertise of Émile FloirnueOur nurseries also grow other outstanding hybrids such as Our nurseries also grow other outstanding hybrids such as:

  • Jubutia (Jubaea x Butia)
  • Jubutiagrus (Jubaea x Butia x Syagrus)

The marketed palm groves have between 4 and 6 yearsensuring optimal robustness when reaching our customers.

Rigorous Selection of Mother Plants

We ensure a continuous selection of our mother plants. Specimens with growth problems, root diseases or deficiencies are eliminated from production, thus guaranteeing quality genetics.

Planting Recommendations

To ensure a good development of the Butiagrus:

  • Exhibition: Sunny.
  • Drainage: Fundamental to avoid waterlogging.
  • Spacing: Leave enough space for the wreath to unfold its full majesty.

Complementary Hybridisations and Innovations

In parallel, we are experimenting with other fascinating hybridisations:

  • Yucca madrensis x Yucca rostrata
  • Aloe hybrids
  • Phoenix reclinata x Phoenix roebelenii (available soon)

European Perspectives and Higher Quality

For years, the European supply depended on imports. However, palm trees grown locally in Spain have demonstrated improved robustness and healthy growth. Prior to their commercialisation in 2023, we conducted extensive tests that confirmed that locally grown specimens outperform their imported equivalents.

Conclusion

The Butiagrus nabonnandii is a palm hybrid with great potential, combining tropical aesthetics with cold resistance. It promises a bright future in European gardens.

Thanks to these advanced hybridisation techniques and the emphasis on quality, we contribute to the enrichment of European landscapes with plants of great vigour and exceptional tropical beauty.
